Black Myth Zhong Kui
中文

The reveal, segment by segment

One upload carries the whole argument. It is graded here row by row against the file itself: 55 rows, 38 of them pinned to a timecode, the last mark at 15:50. Every row states its grade before it states its content, and the studio's own words about what the film is stay the first quotation on the page.

Today, Game Science unveils a brand-new 15-minute gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the second title in the Black Myth series. The trailer offers a first look at the protagonist in combat, along with a glimpse of the story. As the game is still in early development, all footage was captured in-game from a work-in-progress build running at a 21:9 aspect ratio. The final release may differ.

Official microsite, 20 Aug 2026

Each row carries one of four marks. Observed Observed means the pixels are there; Inferred Inferred means a reader concluded it from those pixels; Reported Reported means an article said it and the footage neither confirms nor contradicts; Not found Not found means we looked for it in the film and it is not established. Timecodes are our own measurements against the official upload, not chapter marks from the studio.

The scroll of segments

Drag sideways, or select a segment and press Enter to load the film at that second.

  1. 0-67 s: spiderweb empty shot into misty mountain wilderness, a white-robed swordsman walks alone with a blade; no combat, no interface.

    Observed Observed source

  2. 68-103 s: cave with a wooden door and pottery jars; encounter and dialogue with a grey-haired elder in the forest; a torch is held over a sinkhole and a bird flock bursts out. No interface.

    Observed Observed source

  3. 104-133 s: wrecked timber on a beach; two figures push a bamboo raft into the sea together; an ocean-wave empty shot ends in a brief blackout - a cutscene passage.

    Observed Observed source

  4. 134-274 s 'the cloaked figure and the first group fight': a hunched cloaked figure walks; 155-157 s is a grapple cutscene, 157.5 s a sword draw and horizontal swing, 157.75 s heavy red-black blood spray - these frames carry no interface at all.

    Observed Observed source

  5. Weapons: at 157.5 s the drawn weapon is a sword used in a horizontal swing, whereas from 551 s in the boss fight the player grips a staff, and at 720 s a long pole trailing blue-white lightning. Both a sword and a staff/polearm appear within this single film.

    Observed Observed source

  6. At 165 s the full HUD appears: a gourd-shaped round emblem bottom-left, horizontal resource strips to its right (typically white, blue and a short yellow layer), four small round slots bottom-right plus a larger ring at the far right that sometimes glows gold - about seven seconds after the first landed hit.

    Observed Observed source

  7. The HUD shown from 165 s is never named by the developer: what is reportable is only 'a gourd emblem' and 'three horizontal strips'; reading them as stamina/mana/health is inference.

    Inferred Inferred source

  8. HUD composition as observed: gourd emblem, three horizontal strips (white/blue/short yellow), four small round slots bottom-right, a larger ring at the far right that lights up during the fire-absorption at 357.5-361.75, plus a long centre-bottom boss bar with a Chinese name during boss fights.

    Observed Observed source

  9. Interface present/absent is a checkable divider between gameplay evidence and staging: combat shots (551, 720, 753-759) always carry the HUD, while cutscenes, underwater beats, the band, cooking, mount riding and the end card all strip it.

    Observed Observed source

  10. 275-469 s 'elder, beast and fire in the woods': an elder leaning on a tree with scales and wounds on his face; combat with a quadrupedal black beast; enemies carrying fire weapons; ground fire and fire entering the blade; plus a thick-fog stealth stretch.

    Observed Observed source

  11. 352.75 s: the ground in front of the player ignites first and the fire spreads along tree roots, with the interface present.

    Observed Observed source

  12. 357.50 s the sword point is aimed at a burning silhouette in the air; 357.50-361.75 s orange fire streams from around the scene into the weapon with sparks scattering while the large bottom-right ring lights up - a roughly four-second process.

    Observed Observed source

  13. The observable fire chain has two beats: ground/fire source ignites first (352.75), then fire is drawn into the weapon (357.50-361.75), after which flame clings only at the moment of a strike (362.50/363.50/363.75). What this is called, how long it lasts and whether a pre-existing fire source is required cannot be answered from the picture.

    Observed Observed source

  14. Frames 362.50 / 363.50 / 363.75 show the whole blade alight with trailing flame, yet the 363.00 frame wedged between two swings has no fire on the blade; after 364.25 the weapon is sheathed and darkens again - so 'fire entering the weapon' and 'a fire-charged strike' are two separable moments.

    Observed Observed source

  15. 470-539 s 'into the water and the woman below': the player enters a pool and swims in deep teal water, comes face to face with a long-haired figure, a large shadow moves underwater, then the player climbs ashore in the rain with the entire interface stripped.

    Observed Observed source

  16. 545 s the adversary is framed in full: two giant clam shells behind it with granular bumps on the shell surface; no interface yet.

    Observed Observed source

  17. 551 s the interface appears, the long bottom bar labelled 大蚌真君 in simplified Chinese above it; the player now holds a staff and the two shells flare open. The same name reads identically at 551 / 720 / 758, so it is an on-screen UI string rather than a media transcription.

    Observed Observed source

  18. Rendered text: 大蚌真君, above the long bottom bar, simplified Chinese, visible at 551 / 720 / 758. Supports: this is the boss's official UI name.

    Observed Observed source

  19. 560-690 s is continuous engagement with the boss name persisting on screen; 551, 720 and 753-759 all reproduce the same interface.

    Observed Observed source

  20. 720 s: the player's long staff trails blue-white lightning; the boss reads far more humanoid and the shells no longer fill the frame (a giant curved blade is now in its hands).

    Observed Observed source

  21. The boss's look after 720 clearly differs from 545 (shells no longer dominant, a giant curved blade, far more humanoid). It may be read as 'appearance changes during the fight'; reading it as an official phase division or a body-part destruction system needs one more step, since nothing in the demo labels phases or hints at it textually.

    Inferred Inferred source

  22. 748-752 s the boss leaps into a downward strike with impact flashes, interface present.

    Observed Observed source

  23. 753.25-759.25 s a crouched clash with white particulates coming off the boss; 757.75 s a horizontal arc of electricity binds it; 759.25 s a crimson ring slash plus white detonation as the bar empties.

    Observed Observed source

  24. 770-779 s the interface drops out: the white-robed swordsman is down with the boss bearing above him, then a dark hooded figure intervenes with a short blade, and at 777.5 s the swordsman rises on the other side reaching out a hand; the whole stretch is a scripted beat with no player agency, and the figure's identity and allegiance are unconfirmed.

    Observed Observed source

  25. Correct framing of any summon/possession lead: 770-779 is interface-free scripted staging, supporting only that 'a dark hooded figure with a short blade intervenes', not that the player summons or fuses with it.

    Inferred Inferred source

  26. 800-806 s close-up of the woman in the water: a red mark on her forehead, eyes closed then opening into an open mouth.

    Observed Observed source

  27. From 810 s a fast montage whose sampled frames carry no combat interface: 810-826 s a skirmish among petals and roof tiles; at 828 s a night-forest lantern bearing the single character 勢, beside a painted-face, red-lipped figure in the manner of a nuo ghost.

    Observed Observed source

  28. Rendered text: 勢, a single character on the face of a lantern in the night forest. Supports: the lantern really carries this character; supports nothing about mechanics.

    Observed Observed source

  29. 840 s a blade held in a campfire to scorch it, with two horses standing in the background; 844-845 s a large iron cauldron revealing a humanoid shape by the shoulder and a spice skimmer.

    Observed Observed source

  30. 854-857 s a top-knot man playing a guqin while two skeletons play a stringed instrument and a wind instrument.

    Observed Observed source

  31. 860-863 s a woman paints a red flower mark on the forehead of a man with closed eyes; 872 s a serpent-like mass; 881-884 s a bioluminescent mushroom-cap creature.

    Observed Observed source

  32. 893 s a violet vapor stream links a figure holding an object to a white-eyed, large-bellied humanoid in red robes; 902 s a sprinter glides across a stone slab with white cloth spread like wings.

    Observed Observed source

  33. 908-914 s two similar top-knotted men wrestle; the pinned one shows a frontal scar and stubble.

    Observed Observed source

  34. 923-935 s a cloaked rider atop a tawny big cat crests a pine ridge overlooking a mountain village.

    Observed Observed source

  35. The riding shot (923-935) is interface-free staging supporting only that 'a figure rides a large cat on screen'; whether mounts are interactive or player-controlled is not something the footage can carry.

    Inferred Inferred source

  36. 941-944 s a red calligraphic title 钟馗 on black; at 950 s the address gamesci.cn/zhongkui appears on black.

    Observed Observed source

  37. Rendered text: 钟馗 in red calligraphy on black as the closing title card at 941-944.

    Observed Observed source

  38. Rendered text: gamesci.cn/zhongkui on black at 950, matching the link in the official channel description.

What the film does not establish

These are the questions a viewer asks that the 15:50 of footage cannot answer. They are published as findings, because a montage of set pieces is not a gameplay loop, and the honest answer to most of them is «not yet».

  • Not found Not found

Release window is not established: the official Q&A answer is 'as soon as we can… that pretty much guarantees it won't be quick', with platforms only 'PC and major consoles, see the pre-release announcement'. Any 2027/2028 guesswork is not a fact of this footage.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Story canon is not established: asked for more plot, the developer answered 'hard to say… looks like we're not even done with the outline yet'. Any reading of the montage as a continuous plot (resurrection, masters and disciples, identity reversal) can only be presented as reader conjecture.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Whether these fifteen minutes are linear is not established: the 810-952 montage shots share no verifiable continuity, and it is unknown whether fire in the combat stretch and the 840 s campfire moment are the same mechanic.

    source
  • Not found Not found

The protagonist's identity is not established: there is no nameplate and no spoken confirmation anywhere, and none of the four readings (Zhong Kui himself, an alter ego, someone granted his power, or an unrelated character) has been adopted or ruled out by the developer.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Dual protagonists, a player-controllable mount, body-part destruction and official boss phases are all unestablished - the frame-by-frame source itself lists 'confirmed dual protagonists: unconfirmed', 'confirmed mount: unconfirmed', 'confirmed part destruction: unconfirmed'.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Every system parameter stays unquantified: the fire-absorption's name, duration and whether a ground fire source is prerequisite, what the gourd emblem restores, what each resource bar means, combo and parry windows, and all damage or frame data are unreadable - the footage ships no numbers whatsoever.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Whether Chinese voice-over or subtitles are present is not established: the reviewed material gives no checkable conclusion on embedded subtitles or dubbing language, this task did not read the audio track first-hand, so we do not write 'Chinese dubbing/subtitles present' and leave it for a later frame pass.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Place names and region attribution are unestablished: beach, cave, lake, ruined village and dense forest are only visible terrain classes; no map name or region title appears, so no place name may be invented.

    source
  • Not found Not found

21:9 is a work-in-progress capture setting, not a design target: the official line is 'a work-in-progress build running at a 21:9 aspect ratio. The final release may differ', so nothing licenses a claim that the shipped game will be ultrawide or framed at 21:9.

    source
  • Not found Not found

Difficulty, pause, map and controller-prompt UI never appear in this footage, so neither 'it has difficulty options' nor 'it has none' can be concluded from this material.

    source
  • Not found Not found

The footage cannot prove a gameplay loop: the frame-by-frame source states outright that the montage shots lack checkable continuity and that what one isolated shot shows cannot validate a mechanic; every inference of a loop, build or progression curve from it is extrapolation.

What other people said they saw

Third-party readings of the same film, kept in their own column so that a reader can see how quickly an observation becomes an identity claim. None of these are used anywhere else on this site as facts.

  • 0:28

A competitor article places a sword carried on the back at 00:28, a close-up of a 'young Zhong Kui' at 00:45, a meat-eating old man at 01:22, an '吸火道法' fire-absorption mechanic at 06:00 and the giant boss fight at 09:09. The 06:00 point (approx 360 s) and 09:09 (approx 549 s) agree with the frame-by-frame source's 357.5-361.75 and 545/551 within 1-3 s, so the timing corroborates; the labels 'young Zhong Kui' and '吸火道法' are naming inference, as the footage never tags the protagonist's identity or names that ability in text.

    source

  • 1:30

The competitor asserts outright that the hero is a youthful Zhong Kui and claims the film has no narration and no CG lead-in, while the frame-by-frame source stresses the white-robed swordsman is never identified verbally or textually; the conflict must be closed as 'identity not established'.

    source

  • 5:58

A 17173-translated foreign review lists the enemies seen - ghoulish foes, a heavy bruiser, mad dogs, archers, a winged humanoid, a skeleton band, a lake demon woman - with beach/cave/lake settings, a long sword and instruments as gear, and side-dodge, parry/block, firebomb throw with terrain ignition, lightning-and-fire on the blade, a shadow transformation or powered-up burst, and finishers among the moves. Its skeleton band and lake woman cross-confirm the frame-by-frame 854-857 and 800-806 beats.

    source

  • 5:58

The same translated piece judges the parry by saying the way it deflects attacks 'not only feels real but forceful, and reads as unique per attack angle', then speculates that elemental (fire/lightning) matching will be the key to winning. Angle-varying deflection animation is something the footage can carry; 'elemental counting is the key' is the writer's conjecture.

    source

  • 5:58

A competitor text also corrects a circulated rumor, placing the cooking shot at about 844 s (campfire and cauldron) rather than at the 65 s / 1:05 mark claimed by an earlier circulating breakdown.

    source

  • 12:50

Polygon independently reports a top-knotted 'happy-go-lucky' protagonist using a one-handed blade charged with flame from burning trees, firebombs, and a belt-worn organic gourd the writer reads as holding healing/stamina potions 'echoing Black Myth: Wukong' (that cross-title link is the journalist's own assumption). Polygon also describes summoning a dark-cloaked companion and briefly merging with them mid-battle, that ally fighting with an arched sabre, plus a late shot of Zhong Kui riding a tiger with a green sword sheath.

    source

  • 12:50

Polygon's account of the 770 stretch (a cloaked figure with a short blade intervening, merging with the hero) points at the same footage as the frame-by-frame note (at 777.5 the white-robed swordsman rises on the other side reaching out); the 'controllable summon/merge' reading is interpretation, and both sources concede identity and relationship are unconfirmed. Polygon also describes the boss as a 'clam-winged, barnacled lake monster', visually consistent with the UI name 大蚌真君.

    source

  • A competitor describes the footage as 'cinematic-grade Unreal Engine 5'; neither the official copy nor any reviewed material states an engine, so engine attribution stays a third-party assertion and must never be written as fact.

    source

  • A competitor claims to have tallied '9,900+ overseas YouTube comments' and translated them by category; that number could not be independently reproduced here (comment data was not retrieved) and may only serve as an order-of-magnitude reference.

    source

  • Multiple Chinese outlets ran headlines that 大蚌真君 may be recruited as the cooking girl's helper; those texts flag themselves as player speculation, explicitly conceding it 'may simply be coincidence' and that the developer has confirmed no gameplay feature. Taming/recruitment is community speculation, not footage fact.

    source

  • The boss name 大蚌真君 is quoted from the UI by the frame-by-frame source and appears identically in Gamersky, Tencent News and Sohu coverage, giving genuine multi-source corroboration; since this task could not read the frames first-hand, on our page it must be presented as 'read off the interface, corroborated across sources' rather than as an official press-release term.

    source

  • IGN's 2025 gamescom page calls the game 'an action souls-like RPG' and says 'Players will continue the story of the Destined One'. Both are channel copy: the developer's own wording is 'a standard single-player action-RPG' and it never self-describes as souls-like nor confirms the same narrative protagonist. Neither label may be written as official.

    source

  • English coverage (Global Times / eHangzhou) restates the release as Thursday morning (2026-08-20 was indeed a Thursday, matching the official stamp) via official X among channels and relays audience reactions such as 'Netflix movie' and visuals being 'unreal', giving no second-level timestamps at all; reaction copy may be quoted as sentiment but never as gameplay evidence.

    source

  • Gamersky reports Bilibili plays passing one million and charting site-wide, and Yangcheng Evening News says plays neared one million about fifty minutes after release; this task could not independently verify China-side counters because Bilibili's endpoints returned HTTP 412. Play counts are therefore media-reported figures.

    source

  • The frame-by-frame source states its eight boundaries contradict the skeleton that circulated on release day, which labelled 780-870 as 'summon and possession'; in fact 780-806 still belongs to the 大蚌真君 wind-down plus the underwater woman, and the riding shot sits at 923-935 rather than near 870 - a nameable competitor timeline error.
